With very little funding from the government and a limited number of staff, schools rely heavily on volunteers to help teach their classes. Each program offers a real insight into the diverse and rich culture of this incredible country, while also being very rewarding for the individual taking part. It will also boost your own confidence and improve your conversational skills while passing on your knowledge and skills to appreciative listeners!

Volunteer Role

You will be using your creativity and energy, and be expected to lead conversational English language classes, helping with comprehension skills and English pronunciation of both adults and children. You will be able to design the learning structures of each class and you can be as creative as you want to. You could feature role-playing, games and songs to help. Classes will be between six and twelve pupils. The children at the school are all aged between four and fourteen. The younger children normally are able to learn English without an accent.

Although one of the program’s main goals is for the children to learn English, an indispensable vocational skill, there are a number of teaching opportunities available. Activities and duties that you will be involved with include:
  • Teaching conversational English classes
  • Teaching music at the local music school or assist teaching arts, craft and ceramics
  • Helping with computer classes for children and teenagers at the local computer centre with internet-connection
  • Teaching sports
  • Helping with homework
  • Assisting with play therapy or recreational and developmental activities and help organise special events

Location

The area known as La Gran Sabana, "the Great Savannah" is located in the south-eastern corner of Venezuela, at the border with Guyana and Brazil. You will be based in the heart of the La Gran Sabana national park near to the town of Santa Elena de Uairén.

Accommodation and Meals

You will be staying at a shared house with other volunteers and project staff. You will share facilities, though can request a single room. You will have access to a laundry service and be fed three daily meals along with refreshments and snacks.
