The Sabana is home to the long-established community of around 6000 Pemon Indians. Descended from a pre-Spanish Conquest population and fiercely protective of their cultural identity, this community suffers from a range of environmental and social pressures.

Volunteer Role

The program provides volunteers the chance to spend time living as a member of the Permon Indian community and help out with various activities and projects.

Duties and activities that you will be involved with include:
  • Conservation activities such as research and protection of wildlife
  • Sustainable community development projects
  • Talking to members of the indigenous communities with respect to the protection of river basins and water sources and relative wildlife
  • Reforestation of areas affected by burning or mining activities, indigenous gardening
  • Teaching English to Pemon Indian tourist guides and schoolchildren
  • Building and maintenance work on communal infrastructure
  • Initiate an environmental education program and exchanging knowledge of the rainforest and savannah habitat

Project Location

You will live with the community of Chirikayen, located at the heart of the stunning La Gran Sabana national park.

Accommodation and Meals

You will stay with a host family amongst the locals (possibly the village chief). You will be introduced to comfortable hammock sleeping!  And also share delicious meals, traditionally cooked and served.

You can choose to do this unique project along with another volunteer work in Santa Elena such as community & youth development programs, conservation projects or tutoring and teaching.
