This is a really unique mixture of both crucial research work with wild tortoises on Santa Cruz and more practical hands on and close up volunteer work at a breeding centre on the other island.

Volunteer Role

The volunteer program is the only of its kind and vitally important as the disappearance of the Galapagos tortoises would be a great loss for science and humanity: already four species have died out.  And exclusive species such as the ‘solitario George’ are the verge of extinction too.

Your tasks as a volunteer will include helping with the maintenance of the Giant Tortoises’ surroundings, investigating the biology and displacement of tortoises and feeding these incredible animals at a breeding centre.  In your free time you will be ideally placed to investigate the islands, as well as snorkeling or scuba diving and interacting with the local community.

Project Location

During the program, three weeks will be spent at the Island of Santa Cruz and one week at on San Cristobel, or Isabela, to which you will be traveling to by boat.

Volunteer Accommodation

Santa Cruz Island
While staying on Santa Cruz Island you will be based at the Sustainable life centre.  There are two houses for volunteers.  The main house has the capacity for twenty-two people and the second house takes up to eight people and usually accommodates longer-term helpers.

San Cristobel/Isabela
During your stay on San Cristobel, or Isabela you have the option of a hostel, or home-stay accommodation with nearby fishermen. The home-stay offers an excellent cultural experience, providing you with the chance to get to know the community, be introduced to local practices and customs and the Spanish language. Home-stay housing is carefully selected on the basis of your comfort and safety.
