Volunteers are vital on this program supporting the children of Quito, Ecuador and their families who are living in acute poverty.  The project aims to alleviate the poverty the children experience and help them to make a better future for themselves. As a volunteer you will play a key role in improving these children’s lives.

Volunteer Role

The project now cares for around 40 children and the work has now diversified to help children with educational, social and financial problems. Helping in the poorest areas of Quito, the project relies on volunteers who lend much-needed help to make a difference in the society.

The program is separated into two sections. In the mornings you help out in the ‘Street Children Outreach’ and the ‘School Support Program’ that takes place in the afternoons.

Street Children Outreach
The outreach program is a vital project, which helps children and their families living or working in streets and who are in extreme socially deprivation.  Part of your time will also be spent communicating with the children’s parents.  This is in the hope that eventually the children and parents will establish better relationships.

School Support Programme
The program offers underprivileged children a summer school to fill their school vacation and English classes and homework supervision sessions during term time. The summer school volunteers will be planning activities in areas such as art, music, painting, English and writing and reading.

Many of the families live in poverty and face problems such as illiteracy, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment and migration and are therefore incapable of providing the proper care for their children.

Volunteer responsibilities may include:
  • Collect the children from their parent’s market posts
  • Ensure all children wash their hands
  • Take attendance daily
  • Provide care and support for the children and make sure they stay with the group
  • Plan activities in advance and ensure all materials are ready on the day of the project
  • Participate in activities and help children successfully complete projects
  • Make sure all children get returned to their parent’s market posts.
