As a volunteer on this program you will play a key role in conserving and researching many aspects of this delicate ecosystem, with the purpose of assessing the conditions of the most endangered species and helping to manage their population numbers. This project places a great emphasis on diving, and volunteers spend a large part of their time conducting underwater conservation and research techniques.

Volunteer Role

Volunteers will spend a lot of their time in the field working with ecologists, research scientists and other volunteers (both Ecuadorian and English) each day. You will also have the task of recording all collected information onto the database. Some of our current conservation and research projects include:
  • Distribution and use of habitat of the Giant Manta Ray
  • Monitoring of Shark species in the Puerto Lopez fishing ports
  • Water temperatures in the Isla de la Plata
  • Coral mapping in the Machalilla National Park
  • Installation and maintenance of mooring buoys in the Isla de la Plata
  • Artificial Reef Balls project in the Isla de la Plata

Students can be involved in more than one project depending on their interest and availability.

Location

Ecuador: Isla del Plata and Machalilla National Park, as well as educational programs based in Quito.

Accommodation and meals

You will be stay in very comfortable volunteer accommodation for the whole length of your stay with four people (maximum) in dorm-style bedrooms. A local cook provides you with two meals every day and your lunches will be self-service. A cleaner comes once a week, but you would be expected to keep your living area tidy and clean.
