Working as a volunteer on this project will get you vitally involved in the lives of both the animals and people of the Ecuadorian Amazon region. The centre works in a joint venture with an indigenous Indian community based in the jungle, and has gained over 1,000 private hectares of unspoiled Amazon forest to release the rescued animals into.

Volunteer Role

The project works to demonstrate to members of the community that it is possible to live by sustainable means in the jungle – to protect its animals and rainforest.

Duties and activities that you will be involved with include:
The project gives you the exceptional chance to understand indigenous life in the Amazon while helping to protect the future of the forest, its native people and animals. During your time there you will mainly be involved in the daily care of the wide variety of animals at the centre.

These are likely to include parrots, jaguars, lions, monkeys, macaws, pumas, ocelots, and a variety of other South American species.
  • Feeding and cleaning duties
  • Repairing enclosures
  • Building new enclosures
  • General maintenance/construction
It is important to maintain and improve current facilities to give the animals a natural environment as well as improving the process of rehabilitation. Alongside this, you will have the unique chance to become involved in the supervised freeing of the animals back into the wild.

Within the district, there are a number of ways in which to get involved and help the local people. Such work includes the construction of plantations, building local facilities, or helping with conservation education and similar.

Location

The project is situated between various indigenous communities in the Amazon Jungle, and about an hour’s journey away from the town of Puyo (35kms).

Accommodation and Meals

Volunteers stay in shared accommodation with dorm-style bedrooms (with four/five people per room) and it has a large garden overlooking the Amazon.  Please be aware that there is no electricity for washing, but you can get your washing cleaned by a laundry service offered by the local community costing a few dollars per bag!

Volunteers give $15-20 per week to a fund towards food and food can be bought at the nearby village. Please be aware meals aren’t included on this project.
